The Outstanding Service Awards were established in the academic year of 1991-92 with the aim of encouraging students to develop leadership in the provision of service to the community. The awards are sponsored by the Innovations Fund and administered by the Hong Kong Student Services Association. They are granted to full-time students from Hong Kong's nine tertiary institutions on the basis of the student's record of social involvement, leadership potential, participation in extra-curricular activities and academic standing. It is hoped that award recipients will act as role models for their fellow students and promote among themselves a sense of caring and responsibility in the provision of service to others. A total of up to 20 awards are given every year. Each award recipient is granted a trophy.
Every year, the Award Scheme attracts a lot of applicants with outstanding qualities and achievements. After a preliminary assessment, shortlisted candidates were interviewed by a selection panel consists of community leaders who are devoted to voluntary service.
Please contact the Student Affairs Office of your university for application forms and further details.
Involvement in Campus Life and Service to Others:
The Means to Achieve Educational Goals
In a modern fast-growing industrialised and urbanized world, successful leaders need to be not only well-trained scientists, professionals and managers, but also persons with good communication, leadership and organizational skills. Tertiary institution provide solid academic and professional training. Participation in campus life and service to others assist students in developing the personal qualities that are essential to future leaders of the community.
The Outstanding Service Award Scheme is the first major attempt by the Hong Kong Student Services Association to mount a long-term program to assist students in better fulfilling their educational goals. It is joint effort between town and gown in better preparing tertiary students to serve the community in future.
The Award Scheme- the Lifelong Mission of a University Graduate with
Concern for the Welfare of the Community
The outstanding Service Awards are sponsored by the innovation Fund which was
established in 1991 by a person who has chosen to remain anonymous. A graduate
of the University of Hong Kong in the 1960's, she was actively involved in school
activities and social work throughout her student days. Though "by no means
an outstanding student in any respect", in her own words, she has found
that her involvement in school activities and social service not only gave her
much personal satisfaction, but also provided her valuable experience in preparing
herself for the world of work. The development of a right attitude in life,
concern for other, skills to communicate with people from all walks of life,
the ability to lead and organize are among the attributes that account for her
later success in commercial career in Hong Kong.
With the wish that tertiary students can have the opportunity of benefiting from an active campus life, she has decided to establish the Innovations Fund. The Outstanding Service Awards Scheme, the first project sponsored by the Fund, is a continuation of a lifelong mission of an university graduate who believes that through service to others, people will develop their potential even better.
